This program research focuses on the study of natural environmental flows and includes such areas as, coastal and river hydrodynamics, contaminant transport in surface and subsurface flows, hydrology and computational hydrosciences, sediment transport, urban water resources and planning, water quality, and wave mechanics. Research teams of students and faculty engage in fundamental and applied interdisciplinary research, and use a combination of numerical, laboratory, and field experiments in their investigations. Course work in this program covers a broad range of topics that are aimed at giving students the fundamental tools needed for conducting scientific research and practical engineering. The non-thesis option requires a minimum of 36 credit hours, including a 3-credit research project.

Students must have earned a four-year baccalaureate degree or higher degree from an accredited college or university, equivalent of a U.S. Bachelor’s degree with a minimum acceptable GPA is 3.0/4.0 ("B") on last 60 hours attempted. Students should have secured a minimum score of 550 (paper-based) or 79 (internet-based) on the test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or overall band score of 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

The University has on campus housing which is maintained by Residential Life and Housing. The residential halls include Moody Towers, Quadrangle, Cougar Place and some privately owned halls are Cullen Oaks and Bayou Oaks. The student housing ranges from traditional single or double dorm rooms to suite-style halls to fully furnished on-campus apartments. All facilities are equipped with up-to-date amenities including cable TV and Ethernet connectivity. Apartment options also have kitchens. Meal plans are flexible and students can choose a weekly or semester meal allowance. The university offers world-class exercise equipment and facilities for an assortment of recreational activities. It is a great place to indulge the senses with a performance or an art exhibit. Stages on campus host dance, musical, and theatrical performances throughout the year.
