I always wanted to study abroad during my studies and I chose England because I wanted to expand my cultural knowledgeof the country and gain some valuable experience for my studies. My family and I looked up the University of Cumbria and fell in love with the beautiful landscapes that the campuses are close to. As I am enrolled as a Recreation Major, and having a deep love for the outdoors, I wanted to study abroad in a place with great opportunities for me to enjoy the beauty of nature in its purist form, and I felt that the area of the Lake District had that, and it certainly does!
Student life was great! I'd never experienced a University that had so many different events going on throughout the term. The Students Union really brought the University as a whole together. It was helpful to not think about how far you were from home by getting involved with the different activities within the University so you always stayed busy. The great friends I made and memories I shared with them seemed to make the time fly so fast that it was actually hard when the time came to leave. There were some challenging times though, especially because of all the essay writing. The amount of words that was needed in a report or essay was definitely something new to me. However, the professors were really helpful and it was great to hear a different perspective on different ideas and values. This opportunity strengthened my personal discovery and growth as well as gave me an experience of what it is like to be in a different country to share with everyone back in the United States.
I got to travel to many places within Europe. I traveled to London, England; Edinburgh, Scotland; Dublin, Ireland; Barcelona, Spain and Venice, Italy. I also embraced my love for the outdoors by going on walks in the Lake District with the Outdoor Pursuits Club. My advice to prospective students is to TRAVEL while you are there. There are great deals with airlines, and hostels are a great way to network with other people around the world. Also make sure you get involved with the student events. Time really does fly while you are studying in another country. A great way to keep in touch with family and friends back at home is by talking via web-cam so you can see them on your computer screen.
