The experience is as much as you make it. Give as much as you would like to get back. I feel like I benefited a lot from my experience in Hwa Chong mainly because I participated in many school activitiaes by taking up 2 CCAs. Academics aside, if you want to have a fruitful experience, immerse yourself in school activities and culture. No matter how good the school culture is, if you choose not to take part in anything you will never get anything out of the school.
The usual JC admission process. Just a note that I had also tried the Direct School Admission (DSA) programme but was unsuccessful. Also, I was rejected during the PAE and had to appeal. The admission is largely based on academic results in Prelims and O levels. It would be stringent in that sense I guess. No visa required here. Just be clear about the alternatives route to entry in case yours doesn't work out. And be sure of all the datelines!
I was on the ESIP - forgot what it stands for. This was awarded to O levels students entering an independent JC. It was announced through MOE.
It was quite tough, given the high academic standards in school. But being in an established school also means more resources and better teachers. Studying time in JC was confined to lessons time for me. Best is to pay as much attention in lectures and do your tutorials regularly. This would leave out any last minute rush. Lecturers - there are both good and bad ones. But live with it since you have no choice! Tutorials are the most useful time. Even if you don't have questions, listen to the queries of your classmates. Study support came in the form of consultations outside class time which was invaluable especially near the exam period.
The college facilities were very good. There were sports and arts facilities. There were many eateries inside and around school as well. Foreign scholars had a hostel within school and had hostel activities to assimilate them into school. It was pretty affordable I think even though I didn't stay there myself. Part time work doesn't apply at this level I think. The Students' Council organized school events to bond the students and contributed to general welfare of the school. They played an essential part.
Yes - I left the school with a good name to put on my resume and a good academic record. I would keep in touch with the Alumni for the reason that I was very happy with my school experience and would like to keep up with it. There is an active alumni association. Moving on to uni now!
